Music recordings

Four recordings of Denise's music are online for download here.  Click the little down-arrow next to each title to transfer the MP3 to your computer.

Three are from a song cycle she wrote for a "Songs About Science" concert, sung by Kathleen and Fran, and one is her setting of "Not Waving, But Drowning," which includes her own reading of the poem. "Not Waving, But Drowning" was her contribution to a concert theater event on board the lightship Frying Pan in New York City. She invited me to participate even though I have no formal training as a composer, and we helped each other out: I recorded the pre-taped portions of her piece, she conducted mine.

If anyone has music files they don't know how to share (or any other kind of file, for that matter), I'd be honored to host them.

(Sorry, I screwed this up and had to post it a second time.)

Hi, I have a Google account but am not up on Blogger. Thanks for posting those recordings. I'm still trying to recover from "Not Waving, But Drowning"...

I'll be at the QC gathering tomorrow but later, about 7pm. I wanted to let folks know about a recording of a piece of mine that also features the speaking voice of Denise! It's a comic romp for small speaking chorus called "Don't Ride Off" (based on subway escalator announcements). A brief excerpt can be found on TRACK 3 here.

Denise is heard in the repetitive "step, step!" pattern underneath the 2 soloists. Sharp ears may also recognize another voice or two... =)

I haven't found a downloadable version of the ENTIRE piece online yet, just brief samples. (It's about 5 min. long.) Later on in the full recording, Denise and the other alto can be heard clearly in the lines "Attend your children!" … "step on and off quickly, Don't Ride Off" … and "hold your child (step on, step off)". I'll bring a few copies of the CD tomorrow for anyone interested. It can also be found here.

Denise was a part of my new-works group The Next Stage Music Ensemble in the mid-90s, and she & I also worked together for 4 years with a mixed chorus, plunking out harmony parts every week and creating concerts twice a year -- sometimes against all odds. She stuck with it a lot longer than me, 10 years I think.

There were both wonderful and challenging times, which her boundless energy, ready smile and wry humor always graced. She gave me rides to rehearsal -- in pouring rain & freezing snow -- and yes, we did knock back a couple of post-concert drinks, marvelling at having somehow survived. =) Her playing was always terrific, and her energy lit up the room.

In more recent years we were less in touch, but I will never forget the gift of her presence in my life. She was absolutely amazing. My sincerest condolences go out to all her family & friends.

If you want to copy this into a separate post, that would be cool. I could give you the 2 links above or you could recreate them. Thanks again for putting up the mp3s.

Perry,

We'll be there tonight, but will probably have left before you get there.

If you agree, I'd like to get a CD from you so I can convert the piece to MP3 and host it along with those I've already linked to. Let's email.

It's keith@woollymammoth.com, right? (Tried the direct link but it didn't work.)

Anyway, I'll be glad to get a CD to you. Will you by any chance be seeing Nina or any of her family after tonight? I plan to give them copies if they want.

Thanks,
Perry

Denise was very talented as both pianist and composer.
Helene Williams & i were pleased to have performed (many times) and recorded a very attractive piece of hers, "Reflections," on our MORE SONGS OF LOVE album, produced by LICA on Capstone Records. (Copies should be available from Herbert A. Deutsch, for transfer to mp3.)
I beliee she always tried to be fair, despite anay all pressures, of which there were many.
She will be missed.

Hi everybody - i happened to see a posting about Denise's passing.

I am infinitely sad to hear this. I remember Denise well, her strong energy, her professional attitude, musicianship. We met at a gathering of the NYC composers group. Denise invited me to perform on Keith's piece: first at Keith's home (i believe), recording, then later the live performance on the ship.

Hearing Denise speak, (not waving, but drowning) - it was a good piece then, it's beautiful in a whole new way now.

Denise, you are being missed. But i believe you have passed onto a realm of infinitely beautiful, peaceful harmonies.

My condolences to her family, and friends.
Thanks for posting everybody.
